In the next two to three weeks, I’d like to analyze a few players who can potentially make or break your fantasy football teams as we enter draft season. (Mine’s in a week!)
Our first player under Miguelon’s microscope is Cam Newton. Why? Because he’s the franchise quarterback of my favorite team.
Background Info: From a more neutral point of view, he exceeded all expectations in his rookie season even as a first overall draft choice. With 21 passing touchdowns, 16 rushing TDs and over4,000 yardspassing, Newton’s first season in the NFL was absolutely unprecedented. However, 17 interceptions and two lost fumbles did show the more reckless side of Newton.
What To Expect: Now that defenses have adequate game film to study, there will probably be less 400-yard games from Newton, as was customary during the first stretch of games last year. The most important improvement from this second-year QB will be simply to take better care of the ball. I am expecting roughly 3,700 to4,200 yards, 22 to 25 passing TDs and 13-15 INTs from Cam.
As you’re well aware, Newton’s scrambling ability greatly amplifies his fantasy value, especially considering he broke the rookie record for rushing TDs as a quarterback. Amidst the trio of running backs Carolina will utilize (DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, and Mike Tolbert), I expect Newton’s total carries and TDs to slightly decrease but his YPC to go up a bit.
Draft Projection: There are still a few quarterbacks that will be drafted before Newton (Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and possibly Matthew Stafford and Eli Manning for fear of a sophomore slump from Cam). However, Newton can move into the upper echelon of quarterbacks with an equally impressive second season. If you are unsure of what to do with your second-round pick, you could do worse than this guy.
What do you expect from Cam this season? Will you draft him? Give us your thoughts below!
